Three steps to a professional-quality remote recording

Remote recording has made podcasting accessible to creators and guests anywhere in the world — but it requires a consistent setup to deliver clean, usable audio. Follow these three steps before every session.

Step 1 — Configuration

Set your USB headset as the default audio input and output device in your conferencing app before the session starts. This applies to Zoom, Teams, and RingCentral.

Plug in your USB headset and wait for your OS to recognize it
Open your conferencing app's audio settings
Set both microphone and speaker to your USB headset device
Run a test call to confirm audio is routing correctly

Step 2 — Recording

Record a local backup of your audio in Audacity while your conferencing session is running. This gives you a high-quality WAV file regardless of what happens to the call recording.

Download and open Audacity (free at audacityteam.org)
Set your input device to your USB headset microphone
Check your input levels — aim for peaks between -12 and -6 dB
Click Record at the start of your session
When finished, go to File → Export → Export as WAV

Step 3 — File Transfer

Once your WAV file is exported, send it to your producer via WeTransfer (wetransfer.com). WeTransfer supports files up to 2 GB for free, and your download link stays active for 7 days.

Go to wetransfer.com
Click "Add your files" and select your exported WAV
Enter your producer's email address and your own as the sender
Add your name and episode title in the message field
Click Transfer and wait for the confirmation email
